Aparelhos cinecromáticos

Em 1948, instalado em um quarto cedido pelo tio em Botafogo, no Rio de Janeiro, o artista transforma esse cômodo em seu ateliê. Até 1951, dedica-se à construção do Cinecromático, que se transformará em um marco da arte cinética mundial, especialmente por ampliar as fronteiras da pintura de modo tão inesperado. Nota-se que as lâmpadas correspondem de certa forma a campos pictóricos, que até aquele momento eram associados unicamente à pintura. Para construir esse primeiro Aparelho cinecromático – que participou da 1ª Bienal de São Paulo – Palatnik desmontou um ventilador e se apropriou de seu motor. Essa obra não existe mais porque se mostrou muito precária ao longo do tempo e era grande demais. O aspecto lúdico e a forma como associa razão e intuição – ao criar um sistema interno que combinava de forma aleatória o acender e o apagar das lâmpadas coloridas com o movimento que elas realizavam numa espécie de “carrossel” – são características exploradas pela crítica ao analisar essa obra.

Ludic objects / games

In a certain way, Palatnik’s work would only gain its full and total meaning if it reached the everyday life and routine use of the citizen. His vision of kinetic possibilities went beyond the potentials of light, to involve research into the qualities of movement and time. In 1959, he produced Mobilidade IV [Mobility IV], a game in the form of a box in which the dynamic motion of small metal spheres is driven by electromagnets; in 1962, he created the board game Quadrado Perfeito [Perfect Square]. This game is based on the movement of pieces on a surface like a chessboard. It is different, however, in that no pieces not captured, no checkmate is delivered, and there is no strictly defined starting position. Playing it requires more perception than reason. In 1965, he produced his Objeto lúdico [Ludic Object]. These are games created for his children that display the artist’s two interests at that moment: an increasingly diversified research into kinetic qualities, and into the dynamics of games. The latter is something that dominates his work from end to end, in the sense that we are always operating preestablished programs of making and unmaking movements.

Figurative phase
At the age of four, Palatnik left Natal, in 1932, moving with his family to Palestine. There, he attended school and went on to study mechanics and physics, specializing in internal combustion engines.
He attended an open art studio and began taking classes in the painting of live models. He mainly painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits of his fellow students, teachers and relatives. In 1948 he returned to Brazil, where his thinking about art was shaken to the core when he was invited by Almir Mavignier to visit the Pedro II Psychiatric Hospital, under the coordination of Dr. Nise da Silveira: “Mavignier said that he was going to show me the work of some colleagues, and I went.” The colleagues were actually the schizophrenic patients of Dr. Nise, a pioneer in the use of painting and drawing in psychiatric treatment. Palatnik did not understand how those people, especially Raphael Domingues and Emygdio de Barros, could produce such dense images without ever having attended an art school. It was at that moment that he temporarily abandoned his brushes, although this did not mean that he abandoned painting, as it would continue to appear in different forms throughout his career as an artist.

The W series
Around 2004, Abraham Palatnik began a new series titled simply W. In it, the artist initially painted abstract canvases that served as a “model” for the later paintings. At a second stage, the artist used a laser to cut wooden slats with colors and shapes similar to those of the canvases that served as a model. Then, moving the slats of the (vertically) “sliced painting” to “draw” the second work, the artist constructed a progressively rhythmic form, combining visual expansion and dynamics while exploring the expressive potential of each material. The lines born from the junction of the wooden strips reactivate the color, dynamizing the surface as a whole. The W series represents the continuity of the artist’s kinetic research made using bidimensional and tridimensional supports, produced in a wide range of media (painting, sculpture, games, furniture and utensils). Curiously, some drawings seen in this series refer to topographic shapes or landscapes, giving rise to a singular research into abstract art.

Progressive reliefs: cords
The Relevos progressivos series also includes another group of works known as “cordas” [cords], which were actually made using lengths of twine. The inventive and experimental character, therefore, also permeates this group of paintings made with acrylic paint starting in the mid-1980s. The painting gains an airy volume that helps to form an optical effect that balances the “precarious technology” of the twine with a rigorous and sensitive research into kinetics and the possibilities for expanding the artwork’s form and color through a double movement (of the lines and of the spectator). Moreover, it constitutes an attempt to organize the surface in a way that is different from the normal procedures, introducing a dynamics of color by means of the line. It is a further example of how the artist experimented with new dynamic and kinetic possibilities by using materials considered “unrefined.”

Progressive reliefs: cardboard
In the Relevos progressivos [Progressive Reliefs] series (produced from the 1960s onward), a sequence of cuts in the surface of the material – cardboard, metal or wood – creates layers or waves that vary depending on the depth and location of the cut, thus constituting the work’s dynamics. The use of cardboard is somewhat surprising insofar as the reliefs produced with this material result in rhythms and sinuosities of great visual impact. Frederico Morais observes about Palatnik: “instead of using the surface of the paper, like any draftsman, he stacks up various sheets, creating an agglomeration, to then cut into the top of it… His reliefs, in different depths, result in optical structures with interstices through which the light passes, creating areas of greater or lesser luminosity.” In this series, Palatnik operates with the void, with loss, with cutting: the minimum gesture that places the material into movement, which is the conducting thread of his work. And, paradoxically, this same gesture encourages us to pay more attention to our surroundings. They are lines that beckon for a more detailed examination of what is there in front of us.

Progressive reliefs: jacarandá wood and polyester resin
In the 1970s, he produced his Progressões [Progressions] series, which are “paintings” made by intervals of jacarandá wood arranged rhythmically in sequences of thin slats. Taking advantage of the materiality of the wood grain, knots and other natural marks, he created a structure of designs and gestures that demarcate a dynamic body on that organic support. The artist thus crystallized spontaneous information from the natural world, transforming it into an aesthetic fact. In his Progressões made with polyester resin, also produced in the 1970s, he explored above all the material’s transparence. Through a horizontal expansion, his works evince an ever-increasing interest in exploring color as a means of imparting dynamism to the space. This series shares affinities with the paintings on glass he produced in the 1950s and which were the first step toward his involvement with the design and manufacture of furniture. It can be said that in the 1990s the Progressões evolved into the W series. The jacarandá wood left the scene, and in came acrylic paint.

De alguma forma a obra de Palatnik só adquiriria um sentido pleno e integral se alcançasse a
vida, a rotina e o uso cotidiano. O vislumbre das possibilidades cinéticas vai além das
potencialidades da luz, mas no exercício de uma pesquisa sobre as qualidades do movimento e
do tempo. Em 1959 ele produz Mobilidade IV, um jogo em formato de caixa no qual bolinhas
de metal têm a sua dinâmica acionada por eletroímãs; em 1962 cria o jogo de tabuleiro
Quadrado perfeito. Trata-se de um jogo baseado no deslocamento de peças sobre um
tabuleiro semelhante ao que se usa no xadrez. No entanto, difere na medida em que não
existem peças a serem capturadas ou xeque-mate, tampouco uma posição inicial rígida. Seu
jogo pede mais percepção que raciocínio. Em 1965, executa ainda Objeto lúdico. São jogos
criados para seus filhos que exibem os dois interesses do artista naquele momento: a pesquisa
cada vez mais diversificada sobre as qualidades cinéticas e o fato de que a ideia de “jogo” é
algo que domina de ponta a ponta a sua obra, no sentido de que estamos sempre operando
programas preestabelecidos de fazer e desfazer movimentos.

Em 1932, quando Palatnik tem 4 anos, sua família sai de Natal e migra para a Palestina, onde ele realiza seus estudos escolares e a seguir aprende mecânica e física, especializando-se em motores de explosão. Frequenta um ateliê livre de arte e passa a ter aulas de pintura e modelo-vivo. Pinta principalmente paisagens, naturezas-mortas e retratos dos seus colegas, professores e familiares. Retorna ao Brasil em 1948, e logo depois acontece uma grande reviravolta na sua obra, quando recebe um convite de Almir Mavignier para visitar o Hospital Psiquiátrico Pedro II, coordenado pela dra. Nise da Silveira: “Mavignier disse que iria me mostrar o trabalho de uns colegas, e eu fui”. Os colegas, na realidade, eram os pacientes esquizofrênicos da dra. Nise, pioneira no uso da pintura e do desenho no tratamento psiquiátrico. Palatnik não entendeu como aquelas pessoas, especialmente Raphael Domingues e Emygdio de Barros, produziam imagens tão densas sem jamais terem passado por uma escola de artes. Foi o momento de abandonar temporariamente os pincéis, mas isso não significou o abandono da pintura, pois ela apareceu de outras formas ao longo da sua trajetória.

“W”
Por volta de 2004, Abraham Palatnik deu início a uma nova série denominada simplesmente “W”. Nela, em um primeiro momento, o artista pinta telas abstratas que servem como “modelo” para as futuras pinturas. Em um segundo estágio, um corte a laser fatia réguas com cores e formas próximas às das telas que serviram como modelo. Depois, movimentando as varetas do “quadro fatiado” no sentido vertical, “desenhando” o futuro trabalho, o artista constrói um ritmo progressivo da forma, conjugando expansão e dinâmica visual e explorando o potencial expressivo de cada material. As linhas nascidas da junção das tiras de madeira reativam a cor, dinamizando a superfície como um todo. “W” representa a continuidade da pesquisa cinética do artista, que se divide em suportes bidimensionais e tridimensionais e nas mais distintas mídias (pintura, escultura, jogos, móveis e utensílios). Curiosamente, alguns desenhos vislumbrados nessa série remontam a paisagens ou formas topográficas, criando uma circunstância singular para as pesquisas sobre arte abstrata.

Relevos progressivos: jacarandá e resina de poliéster
Na década de 1970 Palatnik realiza a série Progressões, “pinturas” formadas por sequências de lâminas finíssimas de jacarandá montadas ritmicamente. Aproveitando a materialidade dos veios, nós e outras marcas naturais internas, o nosso olho percorre uma estrutura de desenhos e gestos que demarcam um corpo dinâmico naquele suporte orgânico. O artista cristaliza uma informação espontânea da natureza e a transforma em fato estético. Nas Progressões com resina de poliéster, também realizadas na década de 1970, explora antes de tudo a transparência do material. Por meio de uma expansão horizontal, há um interesse cada vez maior em explorar a cor como forma de dinamizar o espaço. Essa série apresenta uma proximidade bastante razoável com a pintura sobre vidro produzida nos anos 1950 e que foi o passo inicial para o seu envolvimento com o design e a fabricação de móveis. Podemos dizer que as Progressões também se desmembraram a partir dos anos 1990 na série “W”. Saiu o jacarandá, entrou a tinta acrílica.

Relevos progressivos: cartões
Nos Relevos progressivos, realizados a partir dos anos 1960, o sequenciamento dos cortes na superfície do material – cartão, metal ou madeira – cria camadas ou ondas que variam dependendo da profundidade e localização do corte, constituindo sua própria dinâmica. O uso do papel-cartão é algo surpreendente porque a produção de relevos empregada pelo artista leva à execução de ritmos e sinuosidades de grande impacto visual. Frederico Morais alerta que Palatnik “ao invés de usar a superfície do papel, como qualquer desenhista, superpõe várias folhas, criando um aglomerado, e, em seguida cortando-as pelo topo... Seus relevos, em diferentes profundidades, resultam em estruturas óticas, em cujos interstícios a luz passa, perpassa, criando áreas mais ou menos iluminadas”. Nessa série, Palatnik opera com o vazio, a perda, o corte: o gesto mínimo que desloca o material em direção ao movimento, fio condutor de sua obra, e paradoxalmente a um olhar mais atencioso sobre o que nos circunda. São linhas que convocam a um exame mais minucioso sobre o que está diante de nós.

Relevos progressivos: cordas
Esta série, comumente chamadas de “cordas”, na realidade é formada por barbantes. O caráter inventivo e experimental permeia esse conjunto de pinturas feitas com tinta acrílica, realizadas a partir de meados dos anos 1980. A pintura ganha um leve volume que auxilia na formação de um efeito ótico que equilibra a “tecnologia precária” do barbante com uma pesquisa rigorosa e sensível sobre o cinetismo e as possibilidades de expansão da forma e da cor através de um duplo movimento – das linhas e do espectador. Além disso, é uma tentativa de organizar a superfície de maneira diferente dos procedimentos normais, introduzindo uma dinâmica da cor pelo uso da linha. É mais um exemplo da forma como o artista experimenta novas possibilidades dinâmicas e cinéticas utilizando materiais considerados “pouco nobres” no universo da arte.

Kinechromatic devices
In 1948, living in a room lent to him by his uncle, in the district of Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, Palatnik transformed this abode into an art studio. Up until 1951, he dedicated himself to the construction of his first Aparelho cinecromático [Kinechromatic Device], which was to become a milestone in kinetic art worldwide, expanding the frontiers of painting in an unforeseen way. In this device, light bulbs were used to form pictorial fields, which up to then had been associated exclusively to painting. He constructed this first Aparelho cinecromático – which would participate in the 1st Bienal de São Paulo – by taking apart a fan and using its motor. This artwork no longer exists because it proved to be very precarious over time, and was quite large. The playful aspect and the way it associated reason and intuition – by creating an internal system that randomly combined the intermittent color fields made by the light bulbs that turned on and off as they moved around a sort of “carousel” – are characteristics explored by critics who have described this work.
